Philips Smart TV:
Philips Smart TV is widely known for the picture quality and the features embedded in the Smart TV platform. Some of the notable highlights of Philips Smart TV are SimplyShare (DLNA) to share multimedia content between devices, Net TV to access apps, faster dual-core processor and a remote with in-built keyboard. The Philips Smart TV also has a feature where a user can record digital broadcasts on a USB hard drive.
Smart TV’s are not smart as their name suggests. These High Definition TV’s support various communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet for Internet connectivity. These communication technologies also make them vulnerable when accessing the Internet. A VPN Service presents a protective layer (also known as VPN tunnel) to the communication between media servers and your Smart TV while accessing the Internet. A VPN service ensures your IP address is concealed and protected while you enjoy multimedia content streamed to your Smart TV.
Steps to setup VPN connection on Philips Smart TV:
Things you will need
- A VPN service
- A laptop with wireless network adapter and RJ45 port
- Wireless Internet connection(through a router or ISP provider)
- Cross-over Ethernet cable
You need to proceed with the steps given below only after you have setup a PPTP VPN connection on your laptop. Connect you Philips Smart TV to laptop’s RJ45 port using a crossover Ethernet cable.
- On your laptop, click on Start->Control Panel->Network and Internet
- Click on Network and Sharing Center link
- Click on Local Area Connection listed under View your Active Networks
- Click on Properties
- Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”
- Click on Properties
- Click on radio button saying “ Obtain an IP address automatically”
(Note: Keep the Default Gateway, DNS Server, Alternate DNS Server fields blank)
- Click on VPN connection you have created
- Click on Properties
- Click on Sharing Tab
- Select “Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection”
- Under the Home Networking Connection, select Local Area Connection from the drop down menu.
- Note: Ensure the options “Establish a dial up connection” and “Allow other network users to control” is unmarked
- Make sure Establish a dial up connection is not marked and Allow other network users to control is unmarked
Switch on your Philips Smart TV. Some Philips Smart TV’s will need a LAN Adapter in order to connect to laptop for a cross-over Ethernet cable connection.
- On your Philips Smart TV remote control, press Menu button
- Using the directional buttons on the remote, Navigate to Setup->Installation->Network->Network Selection
- Use the directional buttons on the remote to select Wired
- Press Menu to exit
Run the Network Connection Test by following the steps given below
- Press Menu on the remote control and use directional buttons to navigate to Setup->Installation->Network->Connection Test.
If the result of the test is Pass; it means the wired connection is set properly. If the result of the test is Fail, it means you need to check the Connection configuration.
- Press Menu to exit.
Follow the steps given below to set the right connection configuration for the wired connection.
Philips Simplyshare App For Mac
- Press Menu on the remote control and use directional buttons to navigate to Setup->Installation->Network->IP configuration.
- Select Manual in IP setting mode
- Enter IP Address, Subnet mask, Default gateway.
- Select Manual in DNS setting mode
- Enter Primary DNS, Secondary DNS.
- Press Menu to exit.
- Run the Connection Test again.
